Diamond Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is a technique for introducing serums into the skin by mild electric current. Ions convey the electrical current as they enter the skin. The delivered dose depends on the current flowing and its duration. This is administered between one electrode, the iontophoresis chamber, and a second, either another ion chamber or an indifferent electrode. Iontophoresis represents a means of enhancing the flux of ionic compounds across a membrane, by the application of an electric current across it. This technique has been reported useful for the enhancement of transdermal delivery of ionized serums, including macromolcules. The skin is a multi- layered organ delimiting the body. It is constituted of several layers and the outmost layer, stratum corneum, is the main barrier to serum transport. The application of electric current, however, is able to increase the penetration of molecules through this barrier.

The two principal mechanisms by which iontophoersis enhances molecular transport across the skin are:

• Pure iontophoresis, in which a charged ion is repelled from an electrode of the same charge
• Pure electro-osmosis, the convective movement of solvent that occurs through a charged “pore” in response to the preferential
passage of counter-ions when the electric field is applied.

The phenomenon of electro- osmosis has been used as a means to augment the anodic delivery of (in particular) large, positively charged serums, the transport numbers of which are often extremely small (and whose iontophoretic enhancement therefore depends heavily upon electro-osmosis) and to promote the transdermal migration of uncharged, yet polar, molecules, the passive permeation of which is typically very small. In Diamond Iontophoresis, the galvanic iontophoresis method is used in two ways: for Cleansing and for Infusing. The chemical basis for Diamond Iontophoresis is Cleansing method is the so-called “Galvanic Redox”: Oxidation-reduction reactions occur when electrons are given up by the substance being oxidized (the reducing agent) and simultaneously gained by the substance being reduced (the oxidizing agent).
